The drive between Dushanbe and Khujand is not the same kind of prayer-inducing experience as, say, bouncing along in a 50-year-old bus with bald tires on a dirt track with no guard rail and barely room for two vehicles to pass high up in the Himalayas. The M34 was recently and well remade and has an occasional guard rail. But, it passes through some landscape that's remote and bare and rugged and high enough to evoke a minor thrill as well as the urge to make lots and lots of photos. Which I did leaning out of the passenger side window after double-checking that the door was locked, my seatbelt was fastened, and my camera strap was secure.
